CBI submits status report in RG Kar case at HC, confirms Abhaya was not gang-raped

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has clarified in the Calcutta High Court that the RG Kar doctor was not gang-raped, as previously speculated. The investigating agency, citing forensic evidence, stated that the crime was committed by a single individual.

The revelation came during the court proceedings on Friday, where Justice Tirthankar Ghosh raised a direct question about whether the incident involved a single perpetrator or multiple assailants. In response, the CBI presented its case diary and a status report, confirming that forensic examinations pointed to the involvement of only one accused.

This case had earlier reached the High Court after a transfer from the Supreme Court. During the first hearing, Justice Ghosh sought details regarding any additional chargesheets filed and the progress of the investigation. The CBI reported that DNA tests conducted by a team of 14 forensic doctors confirmed the presence of only one perpetrator.

During Friday's hearing, the judge further inquired if the investigation had uncovered any larger conspiracy. The CBI assured the court that efforts were ongoing to determine whether evidence was destroyed or if there were attempts to shield the accused. The agency is currently scrutinizing phone call records and post-offence conduct to check for any cover-up attempts.

The CBI lawyer also confirmed that all nurses and doctors associated with the case had already been questioned. However, the investigation remains active, focusing on whether any broader network was involved.

Justice Ghosh also pressed for clarity on what exactly the CBI meant by “conspiracy” in this context. The agency explained that it referred to actions taken after the crime—including potential manipulation of evidence or interference in the legal process. The court has now directed the CBI to continue its probe and submit further findings.
